The release of Psycho

“Every scene is a lesson in direction by its precision, its sharpness, its efficiency, but also its beauty”.

Psycho in front of the audience

Psycho was very successfull! Paramount was expecting the low budget Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece to bomb, were amazed, and increased their efforts to promote Psycho in the market. Before Psycho used to move on to his next project, after Psycho release carried on promoting the film around the world.  There is an indication of Psycho's success, before Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock used to release at least one film every year since the start of his career in 1927, after Psycho it took him almost three years to to move to another film project.

I need to highlight the fact that audience screamed so loudly during and after the shower scene, that there was an idea to recall the film prints and remix the soundtrack of shower scene by adding the sounds of audience reactions. Paramount refused and in my opinion it was a wise decision to refuse this idea.

Psycho box office statistics

As I have already mentioned above audience was amazed by Psycho and lines of viewers stretching outside of theaters as people had to wait for the next showing. As it can be imagined by reader Psycho like thunder on a dark night broke box- office - records in France, China and rest of Asia, Japan, United Kingdom,Canada, South America and United States of America.  According to “Horror Fims” book only Ben Hur (William Wyler, 1959) had more money in the USA and Psycho had been made for a fraction of the cost.

Psycho is considered one of the largest- grossing box office films (and especially among the top grossing black - and - white films). According to wikipedia Psycho was “by a large margin, the top moneymaking film of Hitchcock’s career, earning $ 11,200,000 ($ 82,5 million in 2010, adjusted for inflation)”

According to boxofficemojo.com - Psycho had received $ 32,000,000 from United States of America only and it’s production budget was about $ 806,947 - as result the ratio of sales to production is 39,6 and we are working with data from USA only. If we add financial and statistical data from all over the world, numbers will be even more amazing and they will document the huge success of Psycho.

Negative voices about Psycho

Usually when there is a large exposing of a thriller / horror film to audience there will be a predictable talk from associations of psychiatrist about film. Psycho was also alleged cited by two murderers as having influenced them (19 years old Leroy Pinkowski who stabbed a 14 - year - old boy to death and 29 year old Henry Adolph Busch who murdered three elderly women.

As result of the above mentioned events there was a large number of psychiatrist demanding to ban Psycho.

Alfred Hitchcock after these reports stated that “he was a chronicler rather than a sharper of human behavior”.
